The Expert Cleaning Process That Ensures You Never Miss a Spot
Durk Johnson of VRHP shares a proven four-step cleaning process for vacation rental housekeepers that ensures speed, quality, and consistency every time.
The Expert Cleaning Process That Ensures You Never Miss a Spot
Outstanding housekeepers share two essential traits: speed and quality. They accomplish tasks quickly while meeting the standards established by property managers. This consistency comes from having a repeatable process regardless of property size.
The Four-Step Cleaning Process
The foundational approach involves four sequential steps:
- Prepare the Property
- Make the Beds
- Clean
- Place the Towels and Amenities
These steps create consistency and make large jobs feel manageable by breaking them into smaller, focused tasks.
Step 1: Prepare the Property
Using the “Follow the Wall” methodology:
- Gather dirty laundry
- Collect and dispose of trash
- Gather dirty dishes
- Report any damage
- Signal clean versus dirty items by:
- Leaving drawers open if interiors need cleaning; closing them when clean
- Leaving cabinet doors open if insides need cleaning; closing them when done
- Turning sofa cushions on their side if dirty; returning them when clean
This signaling system increases efficiency by eliminating repeated checks during cleaning.
Step 2: Make the Beds
Making beds first serves a psychological purpose. While time-consuming, completing this task makes rooms appear significantly cleaner, providing psychological momentum to tackle remaining tasks more efficiently.
Step 3: Clean
Apply appropriate cleaning products to correct surfaces. Clean only items previously marked as dirty to avoid wasting time rechecking.
Step 4: Place Towels and Amenities
Follow your company’s Standard Property Appearance document. If none exists, take reference photos to ensure consistent presentation of towels and amenities across all cleanings.
Time-Saving Benefits
While the process involves moving through each room four times, it actually saves time. Without structured methodology, housekeepers work chaotically, bouncing between rooms without pattern, leading to forgotten tasks. The systematic approach maintains focus on specific tasks, prevents overwhelm, and eliminates errors through consistency.
